Kim Collazo
Inspiring curiosity through science, stories,
and STEM learning.
Kim Collazo believes that every great discovery begins with a simple question: "I wonder..."
That belief has guided her throughout a 32-year career in elementary education and continues to inspire the stories she writes for young readers today. As a classroom teacher, elementary STEM Specialist, and Digital Integration Facilitator, Kim spent more than three decades helping children explore the world through hands-on learning, scientific inquiry, and creative problem-solving. Whether students were designing engineering challenges, investigating nature, or discovering the power of a great story, her goal was always the same—to help them become curious, confident learners.
Kim's passion for innovative science education led her beyond the classroom. As an NC State Kenan Fellow, she collaborated with educational researchers to develop immersive science learning experiences for elementary students. Throughout her career, she has taught in regular education, special education, and academically and intellectually gifted classrooms while earning National Board Certification twice. Today, she continues to design engaging STEM curriculum for various districts and tech companies.
The dream of becoming a children's author became reality with the Emersyn Blake series, inspired by her granddaughter. Her stories combine engaging adventures with authentic science, encouraging young readers to slow down, observe closely, ask thoughtful questions, and discover the wonders of the natural world. She has also created companion coloring and wondering books that extend each story through
creativity and inquiry.
Kim is represented by Katie Monson of SBR Media for her picture books and is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). She has placed in the winner's bracket of several prestigious writing competitions, including Vivian Kirkfield's 50 Precious Words, The Kidlit Chuckle Challenge twice, The Fractured Fairytale Competition, Susanna Leonard Hill's Valentiney Contest, as well as honorable mention in the popular Spring Fling Writing Contest.
Kim enjoys sharing her love of science and storytelling through school author visits,
conference presentations, and professional learning for educators.
